Villains and why they are important

Villain.  The word brings up this idea of pale complexion, black mustache, and an evil laugh.  At least that's how I envision it. This post is for everyone who loves to root for the underdog.  We all know at the end of the story, the hero wins and the villain gets his or her up-and-comings. Otherwise we would feel a sense of disconnection from the story.  All of our lives we've been told that everything works out in the end.  Our fiction should not reflect real life.  Happy endings are always handed out in my favorite book.  The closest we can come is a melancholy ending.  The hero may die, but it all works out and the villain never, ever, ever wins!  At least as far as I know.  Anyways.
